Fallsview Casino Resort

Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Above the Niagara gorge, Fallsview Casino Resort occupies the high side of the slope, with a park strip running along the rim below it. The ground here is steep and public: the land between the buildings and the drop is parkland, and it carries the trees¹. Birds work the air over the falls constantly, using the updraught and the open water above the lip². The resort holds a theatre, a spa and restaurants, and the gaming floor is outside the scope of this entry. Outside, the subject is a gorge edge that the city has kept planted rather than built on³. Rim routes are the thing to check⁴.

River Rock Casino Resort

River Rock Casino Resort sits on the bank of an arm of the Fraser in Richmond, on flat delta ground close to the river mouth. The site has a marina, and the water beside it is working river rather than ornamental¹. This is delta land: low, silty, and used heavily by birds moving along the coast². The resort carries a concert theatre, restaurants and a spa, and the gaming floor is not described here. What surrounds it is a river arm with its own traffic, and mudflat country that begins a short way downstream and keeps going³. The walkway is not continuous, which is worth knowing⁴.

1. 1WHAT SHARES THE GROUND — The Fraser arm runs past the site with tidal water, silt and driftwood. Waterbirds and gulls use the river and its banks, and the wider delta downstream holds mudflats and marsh used by migrating birds. Salmon move through the Fraser system, and the bank carries grass, rushes and scrub.
2. 2WHERE IT KEEPS TO — The birds keep to the water, the bank edge and the flats further downstream, where the feeding is. Around the buildings the ground is paved and built, so almost nothing holds there. The line between the two is sharp, and it runs along the top of the bank rather than through the property.
3. 3WHAT THE HOTEL DOES ABOUT IT — The resort keeps a public walkway along the bank and leaves the riverside edge as bank rather than hard landscaping. Marina activity is confined to its own basin, and the flats downstream fall under wider delta management rather than anything the site controls.

Casino Rama Resort

Rama, Ontario, Canada

Casino Rama Resort stands on the land of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, near the shore of Lake Couchiching in Ontario. Forest and water make up the setting, and both of them belong to a landscape that was in use long before the resort was built¹. Mixed woodland runs around the developed ground, and the lake edge holds the usual traffic of a large Ontario lake². The site carries a concert hall, restaurants, a spa and golf, and the gaming floor is not the subject here. Outside the buildings, the ground is forest, shoreline and managed turf³. Reaching the water on foot takes some working out⁴.

1. 1WHAT SHARES THE GROUND — Mixed woodland of maple, pine and birch surrounds the developed area, and the shore of Lake Couchiching lies close by. Deer and smaller woodland animals use the forest, waterbirds and loons use the lake, and the golf ground carries mown turf with tree belts between the holes.
2. 2WHERE IT KEEPS TO — The woodland keeps to the ground beyond the parking and the buildings, thickening as it goes. Water life stays on the lake and its shoreline reeds. Between them, the golf course works as an in-between surface: open and cut, but with wooded strips that animals use to cross from forest to water.
3. 3WHAT THE HOTEL DOES ABOUT IT — The resort keeps its built footprint and parking within a cleared area and leaves the surrounding woodland standing. Golf ground is managed with tree belts kept between fairways, and the shoreline outside the property is not the resort's to alter.
